Achieving Efficient and Stable Deammonification at Low Temperatures—Experimental and Modeling Studies

The short-term effects of temperature on deammonification sludge were evaluated in a laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR). Mathematical modeling was used for further evaluations different intermittent aeration strategies achieving high and stable performance at decreasing temperatures. As the biomass cultivated temperatures (e.g., 30 °C), higher dependency (the adjusted Arrhenius coefficient θ 11–17 °C = 1.71 vs. 17–30 1.12) specific anammox growth rates found lower (11–17 °C) comparison with (17–30 °C). Further recovering nitrogen removal efficiency mathematical model by modifying (aeration frequency (F) ratio (R) between non-aerated (non-aer) phase aerated (aer) durations) indicated that prolonged R ≥ 4 regardless F value) would help to maintain (~80%) (14–22 Extending phases (increasing R) reducing off/on changes have positive effect increasing energy savings, leading interest this method.
